Probiotics are what exactly?

They are beneficial bacteria that can colonize the intestinal tract. They help promote healthy structure and function. Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the better known probiotics

Is Theralac the same thing as Acidophilus?

Sort of, but theres more to Theralac. Each Theralac capsule contains 5 billion CFU of Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA-1 strain). This is a highly documented, bile tolerant strain with a long history of use in human dietary supplements. What this means is that Theralac is five times stronger in “Acidophilus” than most probiotic products. In addition, Theralac contains 15 billion CFU of four symbiotic probiotics that go well beyond the capability of Acidophilus alone. The other four probiotics are select strains of lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species that are backed by scientific studies. THERALAC IS THE ONLY SUPPLEMENT THAT CONTAINS THIS BLEND OF RESEARCH-PROVEN PROBIOTIC STRAINS.

How can I tell which probiotic bacteria are best for me?

It is always best to request scientific references for the specific bacteria included in a product. Do be certain the references cite the exact strains indicated on the label! The only safe and acceptable strains are those that are thoroughly researched, well documented human strains. It is also important to make sure each is probiotic is listed by its Latin name (two words in italics) and by a strain designation.

Why do I need so many CFUs and what are they?

The Colony Forming Unit, or CFU, is the number of bacterial colonies that form on a single Petri dish. This indicates a product’s viability or strength. A humans intestinal tract contains more than 100 trillion microorganisms from about 1,000 different species, mostly bacteria. It takes high potency probiotic products (those containing 10 billion CFU/capsule or more) to reliably and effectively re-establish the probiotic population within this huge number.

Is it common for a person to have a probiotic deficiency?

Yes, in fact, it is quite common! There are a number of lifestyle factors that can favor undesirable microorganisms over probiotics in the intestinal tract. These include such factors as stress, poor diet (sugar and fat), alcohol, prescription drugs, travel, frequent colds or infections, and aging. It is quite difficult for a person to not have a probiotic deficiency to some degree.

What are the symptoms of a probiotic deficiency?

They vary from person to person but may include one or more of the following: Constipation or diarrhea, indigestion, incomplete digestion, heartburn, excess gas and bloating, lactose intolerance, weak immune response (frequent colds and infections), fatigue, low energy, muscle weakness, and food allergies. Obviously, you cannot be at peak health if you have a probiotic deficiency!

Do I need to take Theralac every day to correct a probiotic deficiency?

No. Because of Theralac’s highly advanced formula you can take two capsules per week after your intestinal microflora has been put into balance (this generally occurs after taking Theralac daily for two weeks). Taking a probiotic twice a week allows for much more convenience and certainly saves money.

NOTE: By taking Theralac daily for two weeks you are providing to your intestinal tract 280 billion CFU; by probiotic standards, this is an effective dose. Once the intestinal tract is colonized by this dose, it can be maintained by the taking of two capsules (40 billion CFU) every week.

What is a prebiotic?

A prebiotic refers to a food-grade substance that supports probiotic bacteria through specific mechanisms.

Top of Page

How do Theralac’s prebiotics work?

Theralac contains Lactoferrin and LactoStim (patented) – two prebiotics that at low dosages are very effective. Lactoferrin works to binds iron and makes it hard for iron dependent, gram negative bacteria (like Salmonella and E. coli) to flourish. This gives gram positive, probiotic bacteria (which require less iron) a competitive advantage. LactoStim is a food-grade emulsifier that supports the growth and reproduction of Theralac’s probiotic bacteria (patented).

Will foods rich in FOS also benefit Theralac’s probiotics?

Yes. Foods rich in FOS will benefit Theralacs probiotics because FOS or fructooligosaccharides – are prebiotics that you can receive by the eating of particular foods; they are required in larger quantities compared to Lactoferrin and LactoStim.

The following list of foods contains a unique source of soluble fiber (FOS) that will support probiotic bacteria. Be sure to eat some when you take Theralac!

Honey1.0%
Rye Bread0.6%
Brown Sugar0.4%
Asparagus0.4%
Bananas0.3%

So, how does Theralac work in my intestinal tract?

The probiotic bacteria in Theralac will attach itself to the soft lining (wall) of your intestinal tract and help it stay healthy. The lactobacillus (“lacto”) strains are the most active in the small intestine and the Bifidobacterium (“Bifido”) strains are most effective in the large intestine (colon). When an intestinal wall is healthy the absorption of nutrients is at it’s optimum. Vitamins and minerals are therefore easily absorbed, supporting healthy digestion and elimination. Theralac will also provide enormous benefit to your immune system…

How does Theralac benefit my immune system?

Theralac’s five probiotic strains work in unison to support the mucosal immune system on the intestinal surface; activation signals are then sent to the body’s systemic immune system. This is a gentle and controlled process because Theralac’s strains are beneficial. Essentially, the immune system is put on alert so that it is ready to act quickly if there an appearance of pathogenic microorganisms.

What is the most common effect I will experience when taking Theralac?

Most commonly, the effect of taking Theralac will be experiencing improved elimination and regularity. In other words, you will experience more predictable and softer bowel movements which will result in increased energy and improved intestinal comfort.

Is it best to take Theralac with food or on an empty stomach?

You can either take Theralac with food or on an empty stomach. Its ACID PROOF formula means that either will work just as well. Theralac should be taken with water, fruit juice or milk.

Top of Page

How does Theralac’s acid-proof formula compare to enteric coated probiotics?

Theralacs ACID PROOF formula is much better and even safer than enteric coated probiotics. The reason? Enteric coated probiotics are treated with a polymer of acrylic acid that is a synthetic chemical. Conversely, the sodium alginate that is used to acid-proof Theralac capsules is a natural carbohydrate that is found in seaweed (patented). NOTE: Studies have shown that > 99% of unprotected probiotics are destroyed when they are exposed to stomach acid for an hour which is a typical time spent in the stomach.

Can I take Theralac when taking antibiotics?

Yes. You can take Theralac when taking antibiotics. Just be sure to take your antibiotic at the prescribed time; then follow with the taking of Theralac two to three hours later. Also be sure to continue taking Theralac daily for at least two weeks after finishing antibiotics.

How many Theralac capsules should I take when traveling?

When traveling, take at least one Theralac capsule per day. However, when traveling to developing countries take two capsules per day – one in the morning and one at night. Treatment of intestinal problems is much more difficult than simply preventing them in the first place. Take measures to prevent intestinal issues by taking Theralac on a daily basis, starting one week before you leave.

It says on the Theralac bottle, “Best if Refrigerated”; how stable is Theralac at room temperature when traveling?

Store Theralac at room temperature (65-75 F) for up to 30 days without loss in effectiveness. Just be sure to keep bottle closed tightly and store it out of direct sunlight.

Can Theralac reduce lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is caused when the enzyme lactase is lacking in the small intestine. All five of Theralac’s probiotic strains produce lactase and therefore may reduce the severity of lactose intolerance.

Top of Page

Can Theralac improve vitamin and mineral absorption?

The small intestine is where vitamins and minerals are absorbed. But proper absorption is determined by the health of the intestinal wall or mucosa the soft lining along the intestine. Because Theralac promotes a healthy intestinal wall it may help improve vitamin and mineral absorption. Further, when the mucosal surface has a slightly acid pH, mineral absorption is improved – especially calcium and magnesium. The probiotic strains in Theralac produce lactic and acetic acids which in turn lower pH (acidify). Should this occur on the surface of the intestinal soft lining it may augment Ca and Mg absorption.

Can I overdose on Theralac?

Probiotic bacteria, such as those in Theralac, have been used in dosages of one trillion CFU/day or more without resulting in harmful effects to the user. Sometimes when probiotics are taken at very high dosages the user may experience diarrhea, but this can be mitigated by reducing the dose. However, first time users of high potency probiotics may experience a period of discomfort as the intestinal tract’s microflora is being rebalanced. This period of discomfort is called the Herxheimer Reaction.

Top of Page

Can you explain the Herxheimer Reaction in more detail?

The Herxheimer Reaction refers to a short period of discomfort that sometimes can result when harmful microorganisms are quickly eliminated in the intestinal tract and their toxic byproducts build up prior to elimination. When the intestinal tract experiences low numbers of probiotic bacteria and is therefore severely out of balance and a high potency probiotic is taken there may result in a sudden elimination of harmful bacteria (or yeast). This may be followed by symptoms of detoxification such as cramping, gas, bloating, or headaches. Typically these symptoms subside quickly as probiotics gain control and the harmful microorganisms are eradicated. If this happens, continue taking the probiotic or reduce your dosage slightly. However, if your symptoms are severe or persistent please see your doctor.

Why are Theralac capsules made of cellulose (Vegicaps) instead of gelatin?

Because gelatin is derived from beef byproducts it is not acceptable to vegetarians and even those non-vegetarians who object to beef byproducts for other reasons. So we have made capsules that can be taken by everyone. Our Vegicaps are made from materials of that originate from plants. Further, Theralac does not contain any: eggs, gluten, lactose, yeast, soy, corn, salt, wheat, or beef products.
